BLUE LOTUS BOWL
This famous pattern is found on utensils used for the celebration of birthdays in the royal palace of Qing Dynasty. Against a blue ground, there was drawn a big peach (symbolizing longevity). On this big peach, there were drawn peony blossoms and leaves (symbolizing prosperity). On the sides, there are small peaches and leaves (symbolizing a series of offspring). Bats were drawn among the small peaches (symbolizing good fortune and happiness). This pattern is well thought out and carries good omen. It is an exceptionally nice piece of work.
Nowadays, antique porcelain wares are becoming scarce. Therefore, these soft colored porcelain wares made in Qing Dynasty are sold at surprisingly high prices in world-wide auctions. For example, on 28th April 1997, a 9-3/4" tall jar with cover embellished with a pattern of bats was auctioned at Christie's Hong Kong, and was sold for the phenomenal sum of US$598,000.00 (auction Lot No. 748).
